MUSIC WIDGETS

vie1205Music – on your blog. A controversial subject…

So many people like to have music widgets on their blogs – but be careful! These are one of the worst offenders when it comes to slowing down the loading time of your blog – which means you may well lose your more impatient readers.

In fact, PlayList has copyright issues, so will hang up a visitor’s screen (and block them from going anywhere else, or even deleting your blog) for 5 whole minutes – or more! I know this for a fact, as it keeps saying I (being from the UK) cannot view or play their (US) content. Can you imagine how frustrating this is?

HOW TO SET PLAYLIST

Sneaky Momma has a great post on this, showing exactly how to set your PlayList player to only play when people click on it – so no more hung screens, and no more getting blasted with music when you aren’t expecting it (when looking at blogs in the middle of the night because you can’t sleep etc).

I’m trying out MixPod on my Blogger blog, and it also has a setting so that the music will only play when you WANT to hear it.

HOW TO SET MIXPOD PLAYLISTS

1. CREATE

Go to MixPod > Create New Playlist > Select Music Playlist Skins (big selection, from cute to geeky)

Click Create A Playlist and choose your music (use the + button to add the music)

2. CUSTOMISE

Click Customise – you’ll see two tabs, one is Colour (so you can customise the colour of your playlist skin) and the other one is the important    one: Settings

In Settings, you’ll see 4 choices

Autoplay – click NO and the player will only play if people tell it to. This is the magic bit that speeds your blog right up, and stops hanging screens etc.

Shuffle – Again, a simple Yes or No choice. I like Shuffle myself. Or No makes the playlist play in the order you chose.

Loop – Yes or No – so do you want it to play continuously, or just play your list one time and stop.

Privacy – you can choose to keep your list private, so only people looking at your blog will see it – or you can make the list public so everyone on MixPod can see it too, and download it if they think your choices are mega-cool.

3. SAVE PLAYLIST

Give your playlist a name, and click on up to 3 boxes to categorise it (Latin, Soundtracks, Dance etc etc) and also tag it if you wish (moody music, breakup etc etc)

4. SAVE

Click the green Get The Code Button. This takes you to a page where you select your format (Facebook, Bebo etc) and you’ll see the embed code in the box (or you can choose to Post To Another Site, ie: straight to your blog etc, which is the one to choose for WordPress).

If choosing the embed code (you’ll create your own html box to put it in) you need to right-click and select Save All  – this saves scrolling! Then paste the code into the box (HTML/JavaCode box on Blogger).

You’re done!

So be nice folks, and set your playlists NOT to play unless people want to listen to them.

HOW TO ADD PICTURES & HYPERLINKS

Copyright-free image Tack-o-Rama

Sorry to say, I  don’t think WordPress is the easiest blog to use … but I love that it has folders, more like a website.

So for all you out there new to WordPress (and I too am struggling) here is how to add pictures to your blog.

Go to your Dashboard > Add New Post

Type any text you want, to start your post, then place your cursor where you want to add your picture. I always like a pic at the start of my post, so I usually type a couple of sentences first, to get myself going, then go back and place my cursor where I want the picture to be sited.

Now, looking at the box you are typing in, you’ll see the little toolbar right above the text box with icons for Bold, Italic, Crossthrough, Bullet Points, Number Points, Quote marker etc etc.

Just above this is some text: Upload/Insert and then some more icons: a picture frame, film strip, music note etc.

Click on the picture frame (I know it looks greyed-out, but it isn’t). This will bring up a box, where you browse for your picture (on your hard drive). Click on that., browse for the image then Upload.

This takes you to your picture, where you can add tags, information about the picture etc etc. I put “copyright-free image from Tack-o-Rama” in the Comment section so it appears underneath the photos, as you can see. You can also set where the picture will appear (left, right, centre, etc – and also what size – all mine are Medium -  and whether to Insert Into Post for pix with text wraparound, or Save All Changes if you want a picture gallery). This uploads your pictures, so you can now see them in your text box. And carry on typing, if you wish.

Either go ahead and publish your post, or click the Preview button (right-hand column) and edit anything you aren’t happy with.

WordPress is pretty good, in that the Preview actually looks how the finished post will look (Blogger doesn’t -  pix upload at the top of the post: you then have to cut&paste for pix to go where YOU want them).

There’s disadvantages in any system (sigh).

As you can see in this post, I have inserted the pictures using the Insert into Post button and added a caption.

I am now adding a hyperlink to the Tack-o-Rama credit by clicking on the hyperlink button to the right of the text alignment icons (left, centre, right)  in the toolbar above the text box I am typing in. Once I add the hyperlink url (in the first box) then Target (I chose Open in New Window)  I then go back and highlight the text: Tack-o-Rama and click on the Bold and Italic icons, so that it really stands out. I didn’t add anything in the bottom two boxes as I already typed in the name I wanted to link (if you haven’t, you would want to enter it in the third box: Title) . The 4th box is for linking a gallery, adding date/time etc etc. Leave it blank if if you like.

If you want a gallery, it’s easier to use the Flash Uploader (just choose this when you click on the Picture Frame icon).

ABOUT THE BLOG BUTTONS

Copyright-free image from Tack-o-Rama

I notice WordPress has slightly changed things on the Dashboard!

Just when I was getting used to the old one…

Some of you are having problems installing the blog buttons, so here’s a fuller description.

HOW TO INSTALL

To install any of these buttons on WordPress, you need to go to your Dashboard and click on Widgets. You should see your Sidebar headers to the right.

Click on one of these to open it out, and then drag&drop a Text header into this area.

This will open out into a Text box, where you will copy&paste the code for the blog button you want to use.

NOTE:

Copy and paste ALL of the code. Don’t leave any spaces. For email buttons, substitute your own email address for the *** in between mailto: and “> . Press Save, and that’s it!

If you want to use your own picture/photo/logo instead of mine, this is easy too. Just put the artwork onto an external site like Photobucket, Flickr or Picasa (all free). It needs to be thumbnail-sized, so a maximum of 96 dpi and 160-180 pixels wide (height isn’t important). You can then take the image code, which will look like this:  [IMG] http://yoursite etc etc and copy&paste the code where mine is. Don’t include the [IMG] bit, but make sure you include all the “http:// ………” bit instead of my own code.

This gives you exclusive buttons, with your own artwork. Very satisfying and not that difficult provided you are careful to put the code exactly where it needs to go, and don’t leave any gaps.

Hope this helps!

If you need help or want to comment, email me (choose either of the buttons on the right sidebar) as so far I don’t seem to be receiving a single comment – they all seem to be designated as spam! I hope I have set the controls properly.

As stated before, I only use this site for WordPress buttons as the code is so different from Blogger. Blogger is where I actually do my blogging, as I like using my own backgrounds which I can’t do here.
